In-Season Private Instruction
Commited to Development
In the context of MSHSAA (Missouri State High School Activities Association) regulations, “private instruction” refers to one-on-one, specialized coaching or training provided to a student by an individual not officially affiliated with the student’s school. This typically applies to sport-specific instruction and needs to meet certain criteria to ensure it doesn’t violate MSHSAA eligibility rules
The Missouri State High School Activities Association (MSHSAA) defines private one-on-one instruction as coaching provided by an individual not affiliated with the school a student currently attends or will attend in the upcoming school year.
- One-on-one instruction: The instruction is given by a single person to a single student (who can have a partner who is not on the same team in high school or recreationally and does not compete for the private instructor at sporting events).
- Non-affiliated instructor: The instructor is not part of the coaching staff or directly associated with the student’s school (either the school they attend currently or will attend in the future).
- Focus on Skill Development: Private instruction should primarily be for skill improvement and not be used as a substitute for or interfere with school team practices or activities.
- Time and Restrictions: There are specific limitations regarding when and how private instruction can be provided, particularly concerning the in-season and out-of-season periods for the sport involved.
- No School Time Loss: Private instruction should not cause the student to miss any school time.
- No Scholarships or Waivers from non-school sources: Students or parents must pay for all private instruction fees, and receiving a scholarship or waiver of fees for such instruction can lead to the loss of eligibility.
Regarding time and restrictions for private instruction, MSHSAA allows students to receive this type of instruction at any time, provided it doesn’t conflict with the school team’s practice schedule or substitute for the team’s practices
- During the school year outside of the school sport season, students can attend non-school sponsored specialized sports camps or group instruction if it:
- Does not result in any loss of school time.
- Does not occur within 14 days of the start of the school sport season for that particular sport.
- Is not a team camp.
- Involves no competition other than limited scrimmaging.
- Has no involvement from a coach on the staff of the school the student attends (or will attend).
